Weight Benches: The typical weight training bench or weight bench is the main piece bought and used in any home gym. It's usually used in conjunction with a weight set and bar for the purpose of working out. Most multi function weight benches have the ability to adjust to incline, decline, flat and military press positions.

Before you purchase a weight bench there are a few important things to consider. This is a big step to take towards commiting yourself to a new healthy lifestyle. You need to buy a bench that will allow you to meet your fitness goals. Are you looking to lose weight? Bulk up? Have more energy? How much space do you have available? What is your budget? Answer these questions before buying the core piece of equipment for your home gym. Fitness Guru and celebrity trainer, Jackson Fullmor, shares the following tips on how to buy a weight bench:

  1. Choose a bench based on the exercise routine you plan to do. A simple flat bench is sufficient for beginners. Use it for complete full body weight lifting workouts. Variation like the incline or decline bench will allow for a complete workout solution. The varying ranges of motion allow complete development of all your major muscle groups.

  2. Consider the space available. If you do a lot of cardio you are going to want to leave room in your home gym for a bench and perhaps a treadmill or a stepper.

  3. What is your budget? Don't fall for the hype of "new" fitness equipment or big expensive brands. You need a solid reliable weight lifting bench.
  4. Consider the attachments for butterflies, arm curls, leg curls and cable extensions that may be included. Look at leg and foot stabilizers if you plan to lift heavy weights or want to feel more secure.
  5. Find out how much weight the bench can actually handle. Verify the feet or base is made of non-slip material that won't tear up the floor in your home gym.

"This bench is one hell of a deal considering the price. I bought it to use with my Sumo rack. As an engineer, I give the designer of this bench an A+ for ergonomics, stability, durability and ease of assembly."
